The First day of School! August 4, 2008

Hello all,
Today was the first day of our 2008-2009 school year!  It went fabulously.  The kids were very excited and woke up at 9am just raring to go.  We started school at 9:45 which is definitely not normal for us.  They worked straight through to 11:15 then we took a break for some play time and lunch.  At 12:30 they asked to finish things up so we got back to work and were done by 2pm.

Just as we were cleaning up our supplies the doorbell rang and it was the UPS man. He was delivering our new DVD's we got 3 "Signing Time" sign language DVDs and "Tomato Sawyer and Huckleberry Larry's Big River Rescue", our newest Veggietales DVD!  What a great way to end the first day of school.

Here's a few pictures of the kids in their new "uniforms".  They wanted polo shirts to wear on school days.  Then some pictures of Ev and Annika's work.  Lucas's "lessons" for the first day were to put the ant on our magnetic "Tunneling to 100 day "board and to play with the math

Love the "school pictures"! Jade will get a kick out of Annika's uniform. How did you put the little logo things on their pics? That's really cool. I am blogger challenged right now though as I can't even figure out how to display our curriculum on the sidebar LOL

I'm so glad you had a successful first day! Your children are so adorable. That's so funny that they want to wear uniforms, Baby Boy shows up in sweats (if he's dressed, usually he's in pajamas) every day.

We're not getting started until after Labor Day!

Great start to the school year!

Congrats on a successful first day. My group is excited for school to start and even asked for an early start. Nice "uniforms"... we actually wear uniforms too and have new polos coming with our school name and mascot.

What great pictures of your school. We are also a Navy family, stationed in Japan. What if any are the hs laws for VA if you don't mind me asking? We are up for orders and could be heading there1

Thanks for your kinds words all.

Someone asked about VA homeschooling laws. They are pretty simple in my opinion.

1. Before Aug 15th of each year you send in a letter of intent (you can download one from the HSLDA or HEAV website) along with a "curriculum description". The description is basically "Child X will be studying LA, Math, History, Science,..." Whatever you plan to and then I always put that "We reserve the right to change any and all materials to suit the best learning needs of the child" but you don't have to send a list of the actual curriculum or anything like that.

2. Before Aug 1st of the following year you must send in a copy of the results of any nationally recognized standardized test showing your child scored in the 4th stanine or higher OVERALL in LA and Math. There are other options like portfolio review, but they are pretty new and for me give the CAT-E from Seton is just so much easier.

I hope this helps some. A good place to look for more information is the HEAV website (Home Educators Association of Virginia) they have lots of good info.
