About a week ago Annika noticed a chrysalis hanging on our front porch pole. We were unable to get any pictures of it to turn out so we eagerly waited for the butterfly inside to emerge.
Then just a few minutes ago the kids came rushing in from outside and sitting in my Annika's hand was a beautiful monarch butterfly. It had hatched from it's chrysalis on our porch.
She's always wanted to hatch Monarch's but we were unable to find a place to order them from.
I was able to take a few pictures of each of the kids holding it and even got some video of it climbing around on Annika.
We hope you enjoy the pictures and video

What a great nature experience. I am so curious how everyone is finding these caterpillars (other homeschool friends have them in their yards, too). :) We only have one little tree in our yard, so I don't think we have any, but now I'm curious. Must go find out...:)
Very cool! We did the Painted Lady butterfly kit this spring and can't wait to do it again next spring!
How do you like Pianimals? I just ordered it for my kindergartner. I might have discovered it from your blog.
We were quite surprised ourselves. We've never seen Monarch caterpillars around here. All we found was the chrysalis after the caterpillar spun it. We had no idea what would come out of it, but it was awesome when it did.
We were surprised a few months ago by several chrysalisis but ours all ended up being moths. Although, one was a beautiful white with black spots. We have had an interesting event for us. We don't have any oak trees right in our yard and have never noticed squirrels in our immediate area. In the last month we have noticed 2have been staying in our yard. Last Friday, we watched as 1 repeatedly went back and forth in our yard to a cedar tree. It had huge cheeks. I know other have ton of squirrel but my dc enjoyed this. This same cedar tree had baby birds a couple months ago. However, we do have an owl and a few hawks hanging out in neighbors 5 acreas(forest).
That's so neat! We only ever get to see spider eggs. Eww!
Beautiful. That's what homeschooling is all about!
