Week in Review March 23-28

It was a nice week here in Virginia. The weather was nice so we spent a lot of time outside enjoying the yard and just reading books. We finished our read aloud of Stone Fox, which made us all sad in the end. Annika was allowed to choose our next read aloud and she picked a book she'd been eyeing for a long time. She chose "The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter". She's been patiently waiting for us to read this so she can enjoy the beautiful illustrations.

Here's a sampling of the work the kids have done this week.

Week in Review March 17-21

It's been a basic week here, we worked Monday-Wednesday and then took Thursday off for a fun "life skills" day and the kids helped me back lots of bread and organize things in the house. We also played outside in the gorgeous weather. Friday we spent with Matt's cousin Jason and his family who drove down from DC for Spring break.
Here's some pictures of things the kids did.

Week in Review March 10-March 14

It's been a good week here at Voyager Learning Center.

Everett has continued to enjoy his Teaching Textbooks math program and worked with inequality, equality, surveys, and tally marks. He has been working on the understood "you" in commands, indirect and direct quotes, and continues to enjoy diagramming in his Grammar program.

Annika has been working through her Click n Kids online phonics and is making good progress. She has started blending initial consonants on her own by just reading some simple readers we found on a recent trip to the book store. The reading may be coming slowly but surely, but it's coming along and she's very proud of herself.

In history we learned about the Vikings and the kids enjoyed learning about Eric the Red and Leif Ericson. Everett was asking about the fact that Leif Ericson's last name ended the same as ours, so I took the opportunity to explain to them a bit about their heritage. They were very excited to find out that not only had the Vikings really been the first to find North America, but that there may be a few in their family tree.

We also celebrated 100th day on Thursday and the kids earned a trip to Build a Bear workshop. They enjoyed going there and making a new animal. On the way home we drove past the local strawberry farm to see if the plants were starting to grow and found the farmer's stand open and with fresh, local strawberries. They were delicious and the 2 quarts we bought didn't last very long.

Hope you all had a great week. Here's a few picture's from our 100 day celebration.

Week in Review 3/3-3/7

It was a pretty good week for us. It was a light school week but most of that was due to the fact that we had some really beautiful weather here in SE Virginia. It was in the 70's many days so we spent lots of time outside. Lukily when Lucas got sick it seemed to just be a 24 hour bug so he's been on the mend since Monday and is feeling fine now.

The kids have wrapped up homeschool PE at the YMCA today and though it was a very nice class and they enjoyed it we're glad it's over. Having to be there 2 days a week during the time we normally do our schoolwork has been difficult. Ev and Anna just aren't morning learners so having PE start at 1pm when we normally start our daily lessons has been making daily lessons a bit rough because we have to start 2 hours earlier than normal. You wouldn't think that would be a big deal but we're just not morning people.

Now as to what the kids did accomplish this week.

Ev's Week

Language arts: He finished about 3 lessons in Growing with Grammar which he still loves. He has started to diagram simple sentences, as well as those with compound subjects and compound predicates. He's also been reading daily in our Read Across Alaska iditarod race. We do this every year and he's looking forward to winning his T-shirt for making his way across the big state. He's also continuing to enjoy Spelling Workout C.

Penmanship: A Reason for Handwriting T is going well, we're not to crazy about copying Bible verses and I'll most likely make my own pages for next year but at least cursive is starting to sink in.
Ev's growing with Grammar, penmanship, and Write a Super Sentence papers from Friday

Math: We ditched Horizons 3 and have moved on to Teaching Textbooks 5. He was getting really bored with horizons and is now loving Teaching Textbooks. Even on days we didn't officially do school work he'll sneak off and pop the disc in the computer because he says math is fun now.

Anna's week

Language Arts: Annika keeps plugging away with Click n Kids online phonics and ETC 1. She's almost finished with ETC book 1 and we'll start in on book 2 soon as well as adding in Spelling Workout A. I also picked up some Nora Gaydos readers for her which she's blazing through. She's so happy to finally be reading and we couldn't be more proud.

Penmanship: She's working her way through A Reason for Handwriting A and it's starting to get a bit boring for her. Next year I'll make up my own sheets for her related to things she likes such as horses and large wild cats. Her printing is getting really neat and it's helped with reinforcement of letter names.

Math: Saxon 1 is working like a charm. She enjoys it so much and I like that it's easy for me to teach it. This is how I learned math so I know just how to present the lessons.

This week was a Science week and we've started Evan-Moor's scienceworks Geology. We're not really far into it but will most likely start growing some crystals soon.

I hope you all had a good week. Ours was ok, but Matt's been out to sea all week and we're starting to miss him alot. We can't wait until he comes home is a little over a week.

Wordless Wednesday 3-5-08

My baby was sick and this is how I found him on the couch Saturday after returning from the bathroom.
He was sound asleep

I know it's supposed to be wordless but I couldn't help myself
